vegan mama figuring it out just a plant powered woman trying to take on the world and master being a mom. menu skip to content home about contact search search for: featured how we got here. featured / veganmamafiguringitout / leave a comment i decided to create this blog as a open journal to my life. my intent is to share my experiences and thoughts in hopes to help other women in similar positions. a little about me: i have been vegan since 2013. i just recently married my best friend, who i met in 2011. we were high school sweethearts and have been inseparable ever since. after returning from our honeymoon in 2017 we found out that we were expecting; however, we lost the baby at 6 weeks. we found out that we were again pregnant and couldn’t be more excited. we welcomed our little rainbow baby in may of 2018. i work for a local non-profit foster family agency and am trying to obtain a ba in early childhood development. my husband and i have 2 dogs, cali, a 5-year-old, queensland heeler/chihuahua mix and leo, a 2-year-old special needs blue nose pit bull. we live in the san francisco bay area and are loving every minute of it. this blog will mostly revolve around my life, my pregnancy, veganism, and the trails of motherhood. cloth diapers: a saga august 23, 2018 august 24, 2018 / veganmamafiguringitout / 1 comment i knew that i wanted to do cloth diapers, even before i was pregnant, even before thinking of having kids (if there was ever that time). i even tried to use cloth diapers on my incontinent dog, worst idea ever. however, when looking for information for cloth diapers, the only real advice that i found was, “you never know what your going to like so just get a bunch of different types” and then they go recommending all the most expensive cloth diapers you can find, which i have neither the time nor money for. we didn’t have the start we wanted with our little girl, birth story soon to come, but after 3 months of successfully using cloth diapers, even after our washer broke down, three times, i feel pretty confident and savvy with them. here is my honest advice/reviews on cloth diapers, no bull, no paid reviews, just what i’ve used, what i’ve liked, what has worked, and what has not. first things first, learn that there are different types of cloth diapers and decide what is going to work best for you. if you are expecting a little one i would say try to get a good blend of cloth diapers at your baby shower (we had a cloth diaper raffle to entice people to bring at least one). this way you get different types and brands of diapers and don’t have to waste your own money on diapers that you wind up not using as much. if you already have a little and are looking to make the switch, i suggest buying only one or two diapers at a time so that you can try them out without spending a ton of money on a type that you hate! best advice i can give is don’t get overwhelmed with cloth diapers, you can use disposable when you need to or go back and forth with them. we didn’t go full-on cloth diaper from day one like i hoped, we used disposables until about 4-5 weeks, because that’s what worked for us. find your own flow. i thought that i would prefer all-in-one diapers, however, these have been my least favorite; not to say that all all-in-ones are made the same, some are way better than others and some i would hardly call diapers. the types of cloth diapers i have used adn will be reviewing are all-in-ones, pocket diapers, and prefolds with covers. there are more types than these but these are the basics and i feel are the most used cloth diapers. all-in-ones review: we’ll start with my least favorite: these organic all-in-one diapers, i had high hopes for these i wanted to love them, they were tiny which meant easy to transport and organic, yas! they fit newborns/premature babies and up to 35 lbs, they just sounded like a dream come true. however, this dream quickly faded as these do not retain moisture at all! after my little girl would wee, even just once, they would quickly soak her cute little newborn outfits. i thought i was using them wrong or that i hadn’t washed/dried them correctly. later i go to look at the reviews and nope these things just suck at their job. organic cloth diaper the second all-in-ones i used had such cute outsides i was so excited when i received a few for my baby shower. these are much bulkier than the small organic ones and didn’t fit my girl until she was closer to 9 lbs. even after that they do leak out the legs as they aren’t very tight to the skin no matter how tight you try to snap the diaper, the folds inside are also a bit of work and to me the point of the all-in-one is that their suppose to be the least amount of work. if your baby has a big poop be ready to get dirty! these may work better on a bigger child but i don’t love them for my little. smart bottoms bumgenius was by far the most popular brand i purchased, and for good reason, their all-in-one diapers are fantastic. no leaks and started to fit when she was about 8 lbs. these have 2 connected folds that have an inside pocket in each fold, honestly i’m not really sure what for, possibly more protection. the snaps were able to secure around my little’s chicken legs and the waterproof cover left me with no worries. although this diaper works amazing, it is extremely bulky, and if your a mom like me that is always on the go, bulky diapers don’t really work. bumgenius i loved the concept of all-in-ones, especially when you already have experience with regular disposable diapers. they seem easy and relatively little extra work. with that said i feel that washing them is a bit more work due to the fact that they are much thicker than the cloth diapers and take a bit more work to get clean in the washer and take much longer to dry. they are more expensive and they tend to be bulkier which can be difficult if your trying to pack light on the go and store them until you get home. pocket diapers review: honestly, i really haven’t tried the pocket diapers that much, i used it maybe once or twice when vay was about 2 months old and they leaked pretty bad even when i “double stuffed” them with two of the microfiber clothes that come with them. i do love these as far as price point and they make up most of my cloth diapers now, i just don’t use them as pocket diapers. i did not like how difficult it was to put the inserts in and didn’t enjoy taking them out when their covered in pee/poop and you cant keep reusing the cover once soiled. although, i don’t love putting the inserts inside the diaper i have used two inserts on top of the diaper when my prefolds are in the wash. i saw no particular differences in these two brands; they both fasten well to baby and are good quality (and affordable!). anmababy alvababy prefolds review: by far my favorite of the cloth diapers, the old fashion prefold. i received a few cloth diaper prefolds for my baby shower and wasn’t really sure what to even do with them since i was set on using the all-in-ones. it wasn’t until around when vay was 6-weeks and i went to our first mommy and me group at the birthing center where she was born that i final saw these bad boys in action. being berkeley a lot of the mama’s there were using cloth diapers and i got my first look at how to use the prefolds, and i though to myself, “damn that’s easy!”. so i went online to order me some of those diaper fasteners like the mama in my group had and i’ve been in love ever since. now, not all cloth prefolds are made the same either… some i received were thick, like really thick, some were extremely thin, and some were in-between. the in-between and thick ones were great on their own and since i had so many of the pocket diaper inserts i used those inside of the thin ones. folding the diapers is fairly quick (once you get the hang of it) and much easier than it looks. i don’t have links to the thick or the in-between diapers since the thick ones were a gift (i thi
